He encouraged his staff to participate in international seminars and to update their expertise through interaction with professional bodies like the International Electrical and Electronic Engineers Association.

" When you hire a designer, you're also hiring mistakes," he would say. He never minded genuine mistakes. It's the careless ones he refused to tolerate.
 
Since he was a frequent visitor to the shop floor, there was no machine were he didn't know and no operation he had not carried out himself. So he also wanted his designers to be down to earth, not locked in the ivory towers of theoretical knowledge.
